StEP was developed to help organizations improve their strategy design and execution through a systemic framework that combines management and measurement.


The StEP Program is aimed at company directors and senior managers who must formulate, implement, and monitor a winning strategy that is consistent with the firm’s mission, vision and values.

What is the Strategy Execution Pathway Master?


While great ideas can put your company on the map and in the public eye, it’s going to take more than brilliance to stay there and surge forward. Nowadays, companies need to have a sustainable strategy execution system in place to be able to deliver the expected results continuously and consistently. With that in mind, the Institute of Corporate Directors invites you to take the Strategy Execution Pathway (StEP). StEP is a two-part management technology transfer program that helps organizations improve in both strategy design and systematic execution. StEP is based on the Kaplan-Norton Balanced Scorecard, the gold standard in performance management. Both the Essentials and Masters workshops are designed to develop strategy execution systems for companies in the context of good corporate governance. 

StEP Masters focuses on the tools of execution for consistent and sustained performance. It is a developmental workshop aimed to capacitate the participants on what to do next after the strategy is designed. The takeaways from the workshop will enable the organization to embed a culture of execution in their organization.

Execution is mobilized with three main ingredients:

a. Alignment – The organization aligns to the strategy by creating a scorecard infrastructure that connects the performance of the units and individuals to the enterprise strategy. Another element of alignment is the integration of strategy execution with business processes such as operational plans, budgets, performance management, and incentives.

b. Discipline – The organization consciously creates the discipline of monitoring and reporting the strategy. With the cadence of execution in place, the strategy becomes a living document, and not a once a year planning affair.

c. Engagement – The organization does not only create systems and processes, but it provides a sense of purpose to the different stakeholders and their role in strategy execution. Managing change and engaging the leadership, the organization, and even external stakeholders is critical to successful execution.


At the end of the workshop, participants are expected to:

• Develop techniques for creating the scorecard infrastructure cascading the strategy down to the lower units;

• Learn from best practices in aligning the strategy execution to different business processes;

• Build the discipline of monitoring, reporting, and learning from strategy execution; and
